Hi all Cycle 16 members,
Many of you have indicated that you’d like to help us get this trail project moving so here is a quick update on progress, and a request.
Cycle 16 has just signed a contract with McElhanney Engineering to carry out detailed conceptual design work on the Phase 1 (Bulkley Bridge to Laidlaw Rd) section of the Telkwa to Smithers trail. At the end of this work, we’ll be able to show you what we have in mind for this portion of the trail in more detail.
The money to pay for this work came from the British Columbia Alliance for Healthy Living and the BC Rural Dividend Fund.
We had a kick off meeting on July 11 with representatives of MOTI, the Regional District, the Village of Telkwa and McElhanney Engineering.
One issue that keeps coming up is the cost of maintaining this trail. The Regional District, who will potentially manage the asset, have an interest in what costs they may expect to incur.
The Request: Is there anyone from among our membership who might be interested in taking on a research project? We need to know annual maintenance costs per km of trail.
For example:
- sign replacement
- painting
- weed control
- pavement crack sealing
- replacement costs of pavement etc.
We’ll have a small stipend (to be discussed) to spark some interest. Our time frame is fairly tight and we’d like to present a professional report to the Regional District before the summer is over.
Please call Tony at 250 643 4054 if you are interested.
